Kandy to Ella Train: Sri Lanka's Most Scenic Railway Journey (2026)

15 March 2026·5 min read#train#kandy#ella

The train from Kandy through Nuwara Eliya to Ella is genuinely one of the world's great rail journeys. Here's how to book tickets, which class to choose, where to sit, and what to expect.

Watch: Kandy to Ella Train: Sri Lanka's Most Scenic Railway Journey (2026)

The railway line from Kandy to Ella climbs from 470 metres above sea level to over 1,850 metres, winds through tea estates, tunnels, and viaducts, crosses the nine-arch Demodara Bridge, and descends into the Ella valley through a landscape of extraordinary green beauty. In over 100 years of operation, the basic experience hasn't changed: steel carriages, open doors, the smell of diesel and rain-wet vegetation, and views that stop conversations.

It's one of the world's great train journeys, and it costs $3 in second class.

The Route

The full journey from Kandy to Ella passes through:

Kandy (470m) → Peradeniya Junction → Gampola → Nawalapitiya → Hatton (gateway to Adam's Peak) → Talawakelle (St Clair's Falls visible from train) → Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) → Haputale → Ella (1,042m)

The total distance is about 165km. The train covers it in 6–7 hours, averaging less than 25km/h. This is not a criticism — the pace is the point.

Classes and Tickets

1st Class (Observation Car)

Fully enclosed, air-conditioned, panoramic windows front and rear. Seats number from 1 upwards — the further forward, the more forward-facing view.

  • Cost: $10–15 per person (Kandy to Ella)
  • When to book: 30 days in advance, as early as possible in peak season (December–April)
  • How to book: In person at Kandy station, or online via 12go.asia or GoTicket.lk
  • Worth it? Yes, if you're a first-timer or photographer. The panoramic windows and reserved seats are genuinely valuable.

2nd Class (Reserved)

Comfortable seat, fan-cooled, large windows that open. Reservations mean you have a specific seat. Views are excellent, especially on the left side heading south.

  • Cost: $3–7 per person
  • Booking: Same as 1st class — book in advance in peak season
  • Worth it? The best value option for most travellers

2nd Class (Unreserved)

Same carriage, but no specific seat. Arrive early and choose a window seat. Standing and sitting on the steps at open doors is common — this is the romantic vision of the Sri Lanka train.

  • Cost: $2–3 per person
  • Booking: Buy at the station on the day. Not available to book in advance.
  • Worth it? If you're flexible and adventurous. Crowded in peak season.

3rd Class

Bench seating, very cheap, very local. Fine for short segments. Less ideal for a 6-hour journey.

High season and unreserved tickets

In January–April peak season, unreserved 2nd class carriages can be packed with standing passengers. If you want a seat — particularly a window seat — book a 2nd class reserved or 1st class ticket well in advance. Showing up at Kandy station expecting to get a good unreserved seat in December will disappoint.

Where to Sit

Left side heading south (Kandy → Ella): Best views for most of the journey — the valley views as the train descends into Ella are on this side.

Right side heading south: Better for certain sections including Demodara Nine Arch Bridge. Many photographers position here for the viaduct shot.

Open door: Some travellers ride in the vestibule between carriages with the door open. This is not officially encouraged but widely tolerated. The best photos come from here. Hold on.

Key Sights Along the Route

Peradeniya Junction (30 minutes from Kandy): The train passes close to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens.

Hatton (2 hours from Kandy): Gateway to Adam's Peak. The surrounding landscape shifts to pure tea estate here — ridge after ridge of green.

St Clair's Falls (visible from train near Talawakelle): One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka, visible briefly from the right side of the train.

Nanu Oya Station: Alight here for Nuwara Eliya (15 minutes by tuk-tuk). The station at 1,755m is often cloudy and cold regardless of weather lower down.

Demodara Nine Arch Bridge: Sri Lanka's most famous colonial-era viaduct. 24 metres high, 91 metres long, built entirely of stone without steel reinforcement in 1921. Best viewed from the Ella side — a 20-minute walk from Ella town. The train passes over it about 15 minutes before arriving in Ella.

Ella Gap: As the train drops into the Ella valley, the Ella Gap — a pass through the mountains with views to the plains — opens briefly to the south. Dramatic.

Breaking the Journey

The train stops at several stations where you can break the journey and re-board another service:

Nanu Oya / Nuwara Eliya: A natural stop — spend 1–2 nights in Sri Lanka's "Little England" before continuing. See the Nuwara Eliya guide.

Haputale: A quieter, less-touristy alternative to Ella. Small hillside town with excellent views and guesthouses.

Practical Notes

Duration (Kandy to Ella direct): 6–7 hours. Trains run late — build buffer time.

Food: Snack sellers board at stations along the route — vadai (fried lentil doughnuts), short eats, drinks, corn. Bring water.

Luggage: Large backpacks go in overhead racks or stowed between seats. Manageable.

Photography: Best in morning light (departing Kandy 7–9am) or late afternoon. The fog in the hills is beautiful but reduces visibility — clear mornings in January–April are spectacular.

Arriving in Ella: Ella station is in the middle of town. Everything is walkable from there.

The Podi Menike (Express Train, departs Colombo Fort at 9:45am, reaching Kandy around 1pm and Ella around 6:30pm) is a good choice if you want the full journey in one day from Colombo. Check current schedules at the station — timetables shift seasonally.
